Position Description
GENERAL SUMMARY:

  • Responsible for providing both administrative and clinical services to patients in the Specialty Pediatrics Clinics.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Carry out the following CLINICAL duties according to standard operating procedures:
  • Perform initial response screening following protocols approved by supervising physician.
  • Obtain, evaluate and record patient history employing critical thinking skills.
  • Measure and record vital signs.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms.
  • Prepare and maintain examination and treatment rooms, including inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Prepare patient for examinations, procedures and treatments.
  • Assist the physician with examinations, procedures and treatments.
  • Assist with cast/splint application and removal.
  • Fit splints/knee immobilizers/cam boots.
  • Perform Nebulizer treatments per supervising physicians orders.
  • Perform Suture and staple removal.
  • Perform Tympanogram and Audiometry testing.
  • Insert urinary catheter including straight catheterization.
  • Perform Urodynamics testing.
  • Obtain throat, nasal, and sputum cultures.
  • Download glucose meters and pumps.
  • Perform ear irrigation.
  • Perform eye staining.
  • Perform vision and hearing screening.
  • Prepare and administer oral and parenteral (excluding IV) medications and immunizations (as directed by supervising physician) including allergy testing.
  • Maintain medication and immunization and medical record.
  • Screen and follow up test results, including calling patients with lab and radiology testing results per supervising physicians orders.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies by utilizing CPR when necessary.
  • Collect and process specimens.
  • Perform CLIA waived tests
  • Perform electrocardiography and respiratory testing including pulmonary function tests.
  • Perform phlebotomy including venipuncture and capillary puncture.
  • Apply principles of aseptic technique and infection control.
  • Practice Standard precautions, including hand washing and disposal of biohazardous materials.
  • Perform sterilization techniques.
  • Comply with quality assurance practices.
  • Employ professional telephone and interpersonal techniques.
  • Call in prescription refills per supervising physicians orders.
  • Document patient communication and clinical treatments accurately and appropriately.
  • Perform accurate, legal, and ethical documentation at all times.
  • Receive, organize, prioritize, store and maintain transmittable information utilizing the electronic medical record.
  • Serve as a “communication liaison” between the physician and patient.
  • Serve as a patient advocate professional and health coach in a team approach.
  • Educate the patient within the scope of practice and as directed by supervising physician in office policy, medications, health maintenance, management of disease, home treatments, special diets and compliance with patient’s treatment plan.
  • Identify community resources for health maintenance and disease prevention to meet individual patient needs.
  • Educate patients in their responsibility to third party reimbursements.
  • Identify basics of hospital emergency preparedness.
ADMINISTRATIVE:

  • Establish, organize, scan and maintain and file medical records.
  • Perform inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills by utilizing and applying appropriate medical terminology.
  • Follow appropriate legal and ethical professional conduct.
  • Schedule, coordinate and monitor appointments.
  • Schedule inpatient and outpatient admissions, procedures, surgery, lab and radiology testing.
  • Obtain precertifications and referrals.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Skill in effective written and verbal communication to interact with varying levels of CHS staff.
  • Skill in typing and usage of computer
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment including a multi-line phone system
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
  • Basic Life Support Certification required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires completion of a Medical Assistant Program, certification preferred.
  • Completion of formal orientation program.
